The erstwhile president, National Union of Benue State Students, NUBESS, Comrade Yoosu Soonen Skyt’s impeachment allegedly revolves around violation of duties, misconduct and actions that were deemed detrimental to the welfare of students as visibly seen in the letter issued by the senate arm following his legal impeachment.
According to sources, at about 10:25am on Jan 28, 2023, Skyt led a delegation of the union’s excos and appointees to the residence of her life patron, Senator Dr George Akume for a familiarisation visit where a sum of 5million naira was given to the then president.

The students were told that the stakeholders went away with 2.5million naira leaving half of the money with Skyt. Out of this money 302,500 was given to the excos/appointees each going home with a meagre sum of 5500 out of the said 2.5million naira remaining balance by 55 students.
Statistically, N2,197,500 was misappropriated by Skyt without trace. He apparently conditioned his mind that no one had any evidence against him.
Misconduct and unethical behaviour:
As instances of misconduct and unethical behaviour, Skyt refused to stage students friendly programmes as he had no appetite for such. All he was interested in was courtesy calls from politicians – avenues to raise money for his personal interest.
In another separate incident on March 16, 2023 at about 6:15pm, a sum of 1million naira was allegedly donated by his Excellency Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia for mobilization to voting units at various locations with the state for guber elections. Surprisingly, Skyt took off with the money leaving leaders and the students stranded after the wait of over 12 hours.
At the end of the day, a sum of 80,000 was shared to 40 students each collecting 2,000 out of the 1million naira. Where did 920,000 naira go?
Failure to fulfil duties:
Skyt consistently neglected his responsibilities to attend meetings which stemmed from lack of commitment to his role as a president. Student leaders are expected to actively engage in their duties and contribute to the betterment of the students which he never cared for.
Skyt went alone to collect a bus donated by Senator Akume to the Union with unknown impersonated excos in Abuja with a sum of 200,000 for fuel that nobody knows where it went.
These led to breach of the trust placed in him by the students engaging in actions that undermined the welfare or interests of the students.
Student leaders are expected to act in the best interest of their constituents and maintain the trust placed in them which the reversal was the case.
One may be wondering why Skyt was impeached. Those were the valid reasons. They brought a trustworthy students leader Comr Sonsha Gbaorun into acting as the president which he has already done more than what the impeached president couldn’t have afforded.
