Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is set to make a significant address on the international stage, as he prepares to speak at the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Scheduled for September 19, this appearance marks Tinubu’s inaugural participation in the Assembly, where he will have the opportunity to address a gathering of world leaders during the evening session.

Tinubu’s presence underscores the prominence of African leadership, as he stands as the fifth African leader to take the podium on the opening day of the assembly. The Office of the General Assembly President has revealed that Tinubu is placed as the 14th speaker among the 20 leaders scheduled to address the assembly on the first day.

Notably, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the morning session, followed by a procession of African leaders in the afternoon. Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Moroccan leader Aziz Akhannouch, and Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi will precede Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu, with Senegal’s President Macky Sall being the last speaker on the first day.

In line with tradition, Brazil’s President Luiz da Sliva will be the inaugural speaker of the session, followed by the host country’s leader, U.S. President Joe Biden. This assembly, known as UNGA 78, commences on September 5 with the inauguration of the new President, Dennis Francis of Trinidad and Tobago, who will hold office for the next year.

The overarching theme for the General Assembly, including the general debate, is centered around the concept of “rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity.” This theme emphasizes expediting actions related to the 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals. The ultimate goal of these actions is to foster peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all on a global scale.

In this dynamic gathering of leaders, Bola Tinubu’s speech will mark a pivotal moment as he articulates Nigeria’s stance on the international stage, contributing to discussions that hold the potential to shape the course of global cooperation and development.
