Labour Criticizes Politicization of Civil Servants’ Salary Review in Nigeria

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has criticized the politicization of the salary review of public servants in the country, arguing that it has historically worked against civil servants.

ASCSN’s Secretary General, Joshua Apebo, expressed concern that despite the completion of the review committee’s work over two years ago, its report has not been released.

Apebo revealed that Organised Labour will determine its next steps after the upcoming meeting of the National Public Service Negotiating Council.

The last salary review for public servants was over a decade ago when it increased by 53.37 percent. Since then, inflation has soared to more than two digits, with an exchange rate of almost N800 to one dollar.

The high cost of living has made it difficult for even the lowest-paid civil servants to survive.

Apebo emphasized that the politicization of salary review has created problems for civil servants, even when an increase has not been implemented.

When private sector workers receive salary increases, it does not cause any issues, but when it comes to civil servants, everyone wants a piece of the pie. He urged the government to stop politicizing civil servants’ salary reviews, so they could benefit from the value of any increase.
