“It’s time to Reconfigure our own BVAS”- Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi has made a call on all Nigerians to reconfigure their own BVAS.

Obi made the call via a tweet on Sunday amidst turbulent days in court with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC over its results at the just concluded presidential elections.

Citing his words, the former Governor of Anambra wrote:

“As the reconfiguration of BVAS has become our watchword today, I humbly appeal to Nigerians that it’s time to Reconfigure our own BVAS “BASIC VALUES ACCEPTABLE TO SOCIETY”  Have a nice Sunday and may God Almighty bless Nigeria. -PO.”

INEC had declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC winner of the 2023 presidential elections – an exercise characterized by series of irregularities and perceived electoral malpractice.

Dissatisfied with the results, Obi and Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP quickly dragged the electoral umpire to court praying the court to let them inspect all INEC materials that were used during the elections.

Despite their prayers, INEC also quickly requested the courts order to reconfigure the used BVAS at the presidential polls ahead of Guber elections which was earlier scheduled for March 11.

Amidst series of back and forth on the case, INEC eventually decried delays caused by the pending court case and further postponed the Governorship Elections to March 18th.

The INEC has also given deaf ears to the courts’ order that it should grant both PDP and LP access to inspect the used electoral materials – an action which has raised concerns as to the level of grave disregard for the judiciary by a noble body such as INEC.

Recall that prior to elections, the INEC’s chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, had promised Nigerians that the newly introduced BVAS and Electoral Act which was recently signed into law by President Buhari were the basis upon which Nigeria’s 2023 elections would be free and fair stating that results will be transmitted and collated electronically.

Unfortunately, on elections’ day, February 25th, INEC failed to transmit the results of the presidential elections while blaming its inability to live up to expectations on some technical glitch.

Results of the presidential poll were thus collated manually while that of the National Assembly which held on the same day were electronically transmitted and collated.
