Tensions have flared within Nigerian political circles as the national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, and the spokesperson of Governor Ademola Adeleke, Olawale Rasheed, engaged in a heated exchange over allegations of the governor’s purported N400 million monthly domestic expenses.
The dispute arose when Basiru accused Governor Adeleke of extravagantly spending N400 million each month on his domestic needs, despite residing in his sister’s home. This allegation sent shockwaves throughout the political landscape, with Rasheed quick to respond in defense of the governor.
Rasheed vehemently refuted Basiru’s claims, labeling them as “unfounded allegations” and asserting that they were defamatory and reprehensible. He clarified that Governor Adeleke was not drawing any domestic running costs from the government’s coffers, emphasizing that the governor adheres to public finance regulations and operates with due process.
Rasheed further highlighted the governor’s commitment to selfless service by forgoing the traditional security vote. He cited Adeleke’s high popularity and performance ratings, asserting that the allegations were an intentional fabrication of lies. “We take strong exception to an intentional fabrication of lies against a Governor whose popularity and performance rating are above eighty-five percent,” Rasheed declared.
In response to the allegations and Rasheed’s statement, Basiru offered a terse and dismissive comment: “No comment. I can’t waste my precious time on incompetent people serving an ignoramus government.
